In my current work, I ask: what happens after the caterpillar becomes a butterfly? Does change end there? What do I do with my wings? Emerging from a newfound sense of stability, the work draws from cultural rituals such as Chinese lion and dragon dance to explore transformation as ongoing becoming. It celebrates a shift from merely enduring change to embracing uncertainty with optimism, courage, and self-trust.
Material choices within the costumes are highly intentional. I utilise contrasting textures including translucent muslin, rigid cardboard, and reflective aluminium to mirror the nuances of identity: fragility and strength, accumulation and erasure. Childhood photographs, drawings, and texts are embedded into the surface and partially obscured, forming a tactile archive and layered tapestry of lived experience.
Heavily inspired by diasporic experiences, my previous works reflected on the emotional difficulty of navigating change, laying the foundation for my current practice and its shift towards embracing transformation with optimism and self-trust.
