My soft sculptures use sewing techniques and a limited colour scheme to explore wider themes of play and audience attitudes towards play.
My work is primarily concerned with soft sculpture and its links to play and participatory art. Through the usage of textiles, I create basic shapes that share physical elements with play objects. The goal of the work is to inspire conversation around the role of play and attitudes towards play.
Sharing material similarities with soft toys and other play objects helps stimulate the urge for interaction. The presence of eyes on the sculptures is also a call back to the theme of play. Eyes help to personify things, in childhood media specifically, the presence of the eye often differentiates a character from an object. By including eyes in my work I want to invoke this rule to further transform the space.
My work is heavily focused on textiles and I use a combination of machine and hand-sewing to create these large-scale sculptures. The process of making the work is intensive, hours of sewing have to happen in order to achieve these shapes but the finished result is worth the effort.
For the exhibition I’m combining multiple of these large sculptures into an enclosed space, the goal is for the work to impose its own rules on the area and transform the space.
