Created using video, music, sculpture, animation and textiles, this installation explores the sensory aspects of my practice. I tend to sway towards the ugly, the uncomfortable and the disturbing as a source of comfort, which is ever present in my work.
Solace in the gloaming is a short film depicting a personified moon being recorded in the woods at night. The moon is a big inspiration for me to morph, stylise and disfigure. She is a representation of the night, which for me, is a bittersweet moment. The footage is disrupted by animated representations of the moon, writing in a coded language and abstract stills. The video is framed with a striped background, a historical symbol for outcasts, and curtains, to highlight the more absurd and theatrical elements of my practice.
Music is a large part of the atmosphere in this installation, it is created using a mix of different instruments and sounds. This includes the Omnichord which is the main sound heard throughout the video piece. I feel that this instrument reflects my artwork fully as it has a very uneasy sound due to the melodic harmony of its harp creating a contrast between the beautiful and the ugly.
In the installation, the video is present inside of three moon heads to create an acoustic sound booth. The viewer has to put their head close to the eye or mouth of the moons to be able to experience the video. As the sound hits the the inside of the heads it creates a whole new world within the installation for the audience to experience.
