Imagine if that internal voice becomes the future of communication, linking humanity through thought and emotion. This project explores a speculative future where technology has evolved communication beyond speech, allowing society to exist within a collective consciousness.
This project has been inspired by the philosophers Marshall McLuhan and Jean Baudrillard. McLuhan believed that technology is an extension of the human body and acts as a ‘second skin’ affecting how we communicate. Similarly, Baudrillard’s theory is that society is becoming so consumed by artificial worlds that these realities feel more real to us than reality itself. He defines this as living in a simulacra.
Both of these theories have been explored in this project through the lens of Avatar. In the film, humans have inhabited technologically engineered Na’vi bodies on the planet Pandora, which has blurred the boundary between reality and simulation.
A collection of speculative headwear has been designed for a future where telepathic communication has replaced spoken language.
The collection highlights what emotional connections technology can create while also sharing the threat to individuality, privacy and authentic human experiences.
The headpieces are being used for telepathic communication within an artificial reality.
Now it is time for you to decide, will advancing technology unite humanity or instead distance us so far from reality we become emotionally dependent on artificial connections?
