Hiya, I’m Edie! My practice acts as a witty and satirical response to the negative perception of the arts. I hope to confront the negative attitudes and stereotypes with parody and contemporary humour displayed through traditional art methods.
The study of Fine Art Students
My practice presents itself through mixed media including: etchings, manipulated text, objects and humour, as a satiric way of criticising the negative stereotypes pushed onto art students. Heavily influenced by entomology, my etchings replicate the illustrative imagery found in entomology books that present different insect specimens. Instead of bugs, mine depict fourteen different types of art students as wooden mannequin art dolls pinned and displayed. With a watercolour wash, I create a visually aged document to forge the aged practice of Ars-discipulusology.
Each stereotype is paired with a piece of manipulated text that resembles the information found alongside these images. I merge common misconceptions with reality and behaviours I have witnessed first hand, creating a veil between truth and fabrication. My stereotypes are grouped in different ways for different reasons, but in most cases done humorously to parody the scientific and calculated classification found in entomology.
My aim with my practice is to make work relatable to the creative community and create a space in which we can laugh and joke about our experiences as artists. Even with this intention, my work can be enjoyed by most with the satiric tone and witty humour being easy to pick up on. However, it will likely resonate and be even funnier to those who have experience in this field.
