Creating a contemporary stage design for the play 'No Exit' by Jean-Paul Sartre. Using small scale papercut, projection and photography to explore narrative and how the characters, with distinct personalities, are forced to perpetually interact within one singular space.

Final Series

Photographic series reflecting the emotional journey of Estelle, Garcin and Inez.

Process

Ink and mono printing was used to represent the 4 characters, alongside photography, all of which were developed through to projection.

Staging

The Valet occupies a secondary role in ‘No Exit’, allowing focus on the three main characters physical blocking. Representing a higher power or controlling presence, the Valet will exist as a figure who is heard but never seen within the performance space.

“We cater for all sorts…”

Valet

“The Music’s growing fainter…I-I can’t hear a sound. All over. It’s the end. The earth has left me.”

Inez

“Hell is other people.”

Garcin

“Ah, is that the way it works? Tourture by separation.”

Inez
