Boogie Broom
This project was created in response to the Conran Design Group competition brief, using design to reimagine an ordinary household item into something extraordinary.
Many young people feel embarrassed when dancing in public, others just want to learn how to dance but don’t have the facilities to. The Boogie Broom is a broom that acts as a dance partner, allowing the user to learn to dance wherever and whenever they want. The project is aimed at young adults, aged between 18-24, to help improve their confidence, mental and physical wellbeing, and help them find the joy of dancing.
The user selects the style and the type of dance that they would like to learn. Once the dance is selected, the app will connect to the broom and the user’s headphones (so they can listen to music while dancing) via a Bluetooth connection, starting the warm up. After the warm up has finished, the lesson will begin. The broom will project the steps onto the floor for the user to follow.
They can check their progress on the app and see if they have achieved any achievements from past lessons.
After learning the dance, they can attend a club night at their student union or local community centre and perform their dance routine. This is advertised through social media posts and posters on bulletin boards in the local area.
Tickets and more information for upcoming club nights and events can be found on the events page of the app.
When the dancers arrive with their brooms for the event, they will be given a wristband based on the dance that they have been learning, allowing them to meet others that have been learning the same dance as them and form friendships through their love of dance.
