Under Body Armour Cooling To Reduce Thermal Fatigue For Body Armour Users

PRODUCT OVERVIEW

CORE is a responsive under-body armour cooling system designed to reduce heat build-up and thermal discomfort during extended armour use. Integrated temperature and humidity sensors automatically adjust airflow performance in real time, delivering targeted cooling beneath body armour through a compact belt-mounted fan module and low-profile ventilation system, improving thermal comfort, reducing fatigue and enhancing decision making for body armour users.

DESIGN FOR MANUFACTURE

Designed with manufacture in mind, CORE incorporates injection-moulded housing components, custom PCBs and a modular internal architecture to improve assembly and manufacturability. Iterative CAD development and prototyping ensured manufacturable geometry while maintaining functional performance.

PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT

Design Development

Concept development explored product form, internal packaging and airflow integration to establish the overall system architecture.

Electronic Integration Development

Functional prototyping enabled early electronics integration, validating airflow control, user interface functionality and overall system feasibility.

Final Functional Prototype

The final functional prototype integrated airflow delivery, electronics and user interaction into a compact wearable system, enabling validation of overall performance and usability.

RESPIRE – Award-Winning Live Project

VISUALISING INVISIBLE EXPOSURE

RESPIRE is a smart respirator designed for industrial and construction environments where airborne dusts and particulates present long-term health risks.

The system monitors changes in filter performance and cumulative inhaled exposure during use, using differential pressure and humidity sensors to account for real-world degradation of respiratory protection. Invisible risk is translated into clear,
visual feedback via an integrated LED interface. By providing real-time awareness rather than relying on fixed replacement schedules, the product enables users to make more informed decisions about filter replacements, task adjustment and personal protection.

Fire Extinguishing Robot Project

A remote-controlled tracked fire extinguishing robot developed as part of a 12-week mechatronics project. Designed to navigate obstacles and extinguish flames, the project involved extensive drivetrain development, electronics integration and iterative prototyping. The final system successfully completed all required challenges during test day, with the video below showcasing both development and final performance.

Industry Experience

Design Engineer – Calomax Ltd

During a year-long industry placement as a Design Engineer at Calomax Ltd, I gained hands-on experience developing functional, manufacturable products within a commercial manufacturing environment. Responsibilities included CAD development, prototyping, technical problem solving and design for manufacture, alongside involvement in product testing, engineering documentation and iterative product refinement. Projects ranged from catering and hydration products to bespoke engineering projects, providing valuable experience in designing products for real-world production and use.
