My work uses black wool felt which has been hand felted by a single needle into white felt fabric to achieve a textured piece that is soft to touch. I chose to work with felt as I have grown to enjoy the cyclical and seemingly never-ending process of needle felting.
The works are displayed to draw attention to the number of needle pricks used to achieve the image. I believe it best acknowledges the concept of women’s unrecognised domestic and emotional labour through displaying both sides.
I chose to depict myself in an oversized suit in these felt drawings to portray a costume. The image of what a woman should look like going out to work except it is ill-fitting and awkward. This is to express my feelings of discomfort and inadequacy within not only professional spaces but also within ‘grown-up’ womanly spheres.
The black and white imagery is stark and simple to portray the binaries and the constructed line between girl and woman. This compliments the material contrast of the sharp needle and the soft felt.
