What is Pulse?

Pulse is a compact, all-in-one oral care device designed for people who don’t floss. A toothbrush and water flosser tip are stored within the handle and flip out at the push of a button keeping everything in one place, ready to use.
No separate tools, no extra steps, no reason not to do both.

The Problem

Flossing fails not because users lack motivation, but because switching tools breaks momentum. A toothbrush reaches only 60% of tooth surfaces, yet the remaining 40% goes consistently uncleaned leading to cavities bad breath and gum disease. Not from neglect, but because the transition to a separate tool is the point at which the routine stops.

Scenario of use

Physical Prototyping and User Testing

Understanding the user’s need was critical to determine the usability of Pulse to seamless fit into the target user routine.

I made users test a series of functional and aesthetic prototypes to develop the concept, to reach the final outcome.

Function and usability prototypes to aesthetic prototypes.

Reparability, Built in

Most electric toothbrushes are sealed for life. When the battery dies, the whole thing goes in the bin.

Pulse is different. One snap connectors removes the full chassis so it can slides out; the battery, motor, and pump can each be replaced.

Designed to be repaired, not replaced.

“A non – invasive device that measures hydration levels, making users more aware; aiding in improve their health”

This live project, set by design consultancy IDC, challenged us to design a product that monitors something to make users more aware and improve their health. I proposed a non-invasive hydration monitor that gives users instant awareness of their hydration levels to support healthier habits.

The design was awarded 3rd place in the Design Week competition.
