A Conversation is a video installation consisting of two out-of-sync projections cast onto adjacent sheer curtains, accompanied by a chair and a length of lace ribbon. The work documents an exploration of grief through a repetitive performance staged within the woods. The subject repeatedly binds their hands and eyes before struggling free, reflecting the cyclical nature of pain, healing, and return.
Layering of the footage, obscures the viewer’s view and distances them from this deeply personal inner conflict/turmoil, while projection onto translucent fabric further softens the image, creating a fragile and ghostly presence. Positioned opposite the projections, a solitary chair invites the audience into the space, implicating them as part of the artwork and the ‘conversation’.
A Conversation began as a personal attempt to understand and externalise complicated feelings surrounding grief. Through repetitive physical actions, the performance transformed internal emotions into something tangible, allowing grief to exist beyond thought and within the body itself.
The development of the work moved through experimentation with movement, location, and video layering. Early documentation captures the first emergence of the performance, followed by tests within different locations and raw footage later used within the final installation edit.
Over time, the work evolved beyond personal reflection and became a way to open a wider conversation around grief. By translating difficult emotions into shared visual experiences, the installation aims to make conversations surrounding loss, vulnerability, and healing more accessible.
