My final degree project, Common Ground, celebrates the people of Ulster (northern province of Ireland) and its diaspora. A region of dramatic landscapes and a rich industrial history defined by a legacy of quality craftsmanship and creative dynamism, this project champions the people and communities which have each made a meaningful mark on the development of Ulster.
Drawing from my own Ulster heritage and lived experiences as part of the 2nd generation diaspora, the project explores complex relationships between culture, identity and belonging.
Design development focused on evoking natural organic textures and sweeping landscapes characteristic of Ulster: it’s rich reds and golds, glacial valleys (drumlins) and basalt stone columns, entwining ancient trees and cutting cliff edges.
Exploring techniques from Ulster’s traditional textile industries, including weaving, knitting, lace production and appliqué quilting, the project showcases the beautiful characteristics and qualities of linen and wool, materials historically sourced across Ulster and integral to its textile industries.
