Major Project – SALTR

SALTR rethinks sodium replenishment for endurance athletes through wearable sensing and intuitive one-handed interaction.

Problem

Participation in endurance running has increased significantly in recent years, particularly amongst recreational athletes undertaking marathons and ultra-distance events. Unlike elite runners, many recreational athletes lack access to professional coaching, physiological testing and personalised hydration guidance, often relying on generic sports nutrition advice to manage prolonged exercise.

This can increase the risk of Exercise-Associated Hyponatremia (EAH), a condition caused by low sodium concentration in the blood due to prolonged sodium loss and overhydration. Symptoms can include: fatigue, cramping, dizziness, confusion and, in severe cases, seizures or loss of consciousness.

System

SALTR is a wearable sodium monitoring and replenishment system designed for endurance runners participating in prolonged exercise. Positioned on the upper arm, the device combines real-time sweat sodium sensing, haptic and LED feedback, and an integrated one-handed sodium capsule dispensing mechanism within a compact wearable form.

Solution

SALTR continuously monitors sodium concentration within the user’s sweat using an integrated sensing module positioned against the skin. When sodium depletion reaches a defined threshold, the system alerts the runner through tactile haptic feedback and peripheral LED illumination, allowing them to remain focused on their movement and surroundings.

The wearable incorporates a spring-loaded dispensing mechanism enabling runners to retrieve sodium capsules quickly through a single one-handed interaction. The system aims to improve sodium awareness and replenishment accessibility while reducing disruption during endurance activity.
