Textile designer specialising in sustainable practices, print, and material innovation. My work explores circular design and how sustainability can be integrated into the design of a product to reconsider the possibilities of apparel textiles.

Return to Soil

‘Return to Soil’ is a womenswear 2-layer outdoor jacket system consisting of a water-repellent outer shell and thermoregulating wool mid layer. The project’s collection of technical materials are informed by my most memorable hiking experiences from regular trips to the Lake District and Scottish Highlands. Enduring various harsh weather conditions and rugged terrain, I am constantly reminded of the importance of reliable, high performing gear. Using only natural materials, this collection aims to deliver functional fabrics without the harmful substances or chemicals conventionally used in outdoor gear.

Informed by the principles of the circular economy, the innovative textiles created in this project use discarded lignocellulosic green waste to encourage the regeneration of nature and reduction of waste. As a result, the textiles can be home composted to return valuable nutrients to soil.

The colours and patterns present in the project’s samples have been primarily led by the processes of nature. As the leaves are exposed to sunlight and regular wear, their colour adapts to the user’s engagement with the garment. Shaped partly by the consumer, the jacket uniquely forms a worn item which showcases the stories and journeys wearers have shared with their gear.
