Reading has no longer been the same among Gen Z and Millennials, not just the shift in the content and media – from printed to digital, but also its meaning. Reading has become a social act for these groups of audiences, creating the “reader” label, which is completely distinct from “reading” behavior, making reading more performative than ever before. This, combined with how much information we consume daily on average, leads to information overload, has made reading an exhausting act, both physically and mentally.
Orikai is a web platform and subscription service that turns the things you read — articles, essays, short stories, newsletters, anything between 500 and 3000 words — into origami you can fold and keep. This project aims to help the audience enjoy reading more holistically by reframing their reading process as valid and meaningful, regardless of format or quantity.
Initiation touchpoints include social media presence, along with OOH campaign strategies, generating curiosity and urging the audiences to check out the main product – the website.
After accessing the landing page and creating an account, users can bookmark or upload articles, newspaper articles, etc., as long as they fall within the 500 to 3000-word limit per article. Then the text will be automatically typeset onto 20×20 origami paper sheets, with section numbers and crease pattern serving as a reading guide. They can also customize the origami models, colors, and typefaces.
They can also save different variations of the same article and choose to print whatever they like. After having folded the models, they can take a picture of the models and use it as not only a way to show the community what you’ve made, but also to mark that you’ve “finished” reading the article.
In addition to the free newsletter and home printing, users can subscribe to Orikai’s paid monthly service. Aside from invitations and offers for future events, subscribers will receive a monthly mailer with access to copyrighted origami models. Each mail contains origami paper for 4 selected articles from their library, with customized origami models. Along with the papers, they also receive an accordion instruction booklet, with QR code available to video tutorials, in case they find it hard to read diagrams.
Simply a colorful and foldable educational zine about cuttlefish. Compared to other cephalopods, they absolutely deserve more spotlight, and who wouldn’t love a squid-lookalike with an octopus’s intelligence? From how different they are from squids, to what kind of dishes can be made from these guys, this zine is a beginner’s guide to a cuttlefish.
It’s made up of two classic 8-page zines connected to each other, with small interactive quizzes that utilize anaglyph images, so it’s best if you have two sheets of acrylic, one blue and one red, or just a classic pair of 3D glasses would do the job. The zine also has a calendar on its other side, for anyone interested in hanging it up or using it for timekeeping.
