The project aims to address the growing issue of substance-related harm within nightlife, festival and entertainment environments, where individuals may consume illicit substances without knowing their true contents or potential adulterants. Current drug checking methods are often inaccessible, expensive, time consuming, or restricted to specialist environments, limiting their availability during first-contact situations where rapid decision making may be required. This creates a need for a more portable, accessible, and user-friendly system that could support harm reduction practices by providing quicker indication of potential substances and associated risks within active real-world environments.


The device could be used within both front-of-house and back-of-house testing scenarios, allowing either direct substance screening for users as part of harm reduction initiatives, or use by security, welfare, and emergency response teams for rapid assessment and trend tracking within event environments. The device works by placing a substance sample within the intake tray, where the reflected light is then captured and analysed by the integrated spectrometry system. Different chemical compounds absorb, allowing the device’s Near Infrared (NIR) spectroscopy technology to compare the captured spectral data against a reference database identify potential adulterants. The system is designed to provide a rapid and accessible indication of results through a simplified digital interface, using on-screen prompts and colour-coded feedback to support quick decision making within fast-paced environments.
The device is intended solely as a harm reduction tool designed to improve safety and awareness, and is not intended to encourage, promote, or facilitate illicit substance use.


The project was completed as part of a group effort to design and build a remote-controlled robot for a robotics challenge. The robot was created to be mobile enough to navigate an obstacle course while also completing the task of extinguishing a candle flame. Throughout the project, the team worked on the design, testing, and improvement process, adjusting the robot’s structure, movement, and control features. This project helped strengthen skills in teamwork, problem-solving, engineering design, and troubleshooting as the design was refined through trial and error.

Water harvesting in the home transforms rainfall from a wasted by-product into a practical resource, encouraging more thoughtful and sustainable everyday water use.
This device will be placed outside your home and passively collect water from rainfall over time. This can then be internally filtered and purified. the drinkable stored water is then at your disposal to use or not use whenever you see fit. This product is not to force you, but to provide you with an accessible intentional solution for your water usage.
