Hello I'm George, a product designer who blends creativity with technical thinking. I like to approach design in a practical and considered way, combining problem-solving with attention to detail.

Apex Shield

An integrated karting seat and rib protection concept developed to improve driver support, containment and impact management within competitive karting.

Project overview

Apex Shield is an integrated karting seat and rib protection system developed to improve driver containment, comfort and rib support through a more secure shell form.

From problem to proposal

The project began with a need to address the disconnect between conventional kart seats and separate rib protectors, then developed through research, concept refinement, prototyping and testing.

Research

Field observations, competitor review, body-fit considerations and materials research informed the early direction of the project and established the need for a more integrated solution.

Design development

Shell geometry was refined to create greater upper-body containment, improved rib security and a more supportive overall profile while remaining realistic for competitive kart use.

Testing

User and material testing helped evaluate comfort, impact absorption and the practical value of a modular insert system.

Outcome

The final proposal resolves safety, comfort, sizing and manufacture into a single product architecture with a clearer relationship between protection and seat form.

Other Projects

Solidworks Surface Modelling

The surface modelling project focused on developing the rear third of a new car design in SolidWorks through a controlled surfacing workflow, using construction sketches, boundary surfaces, sweeps, lofts and extrudes to build the body, lights, wheels and rear aerodynamic elements.

The model was refined through repeated overbuilding, trimming and continuity checks, with G2 curvature continuity used wherever possible to maintain smooth transitions and avoid surface defects.

Design Week

The Isomarker was developed as a premium whiteboard marker for design and engineering environments, combining a more refined metal body, interchangeable nibs and a replaceable ink system with a CMF language inspired by rOtring’s precision-led brand identity.

Research into current marker use highlighted issues with disposable construction, inconsistent line quality and short lifespan, which informed the development of a more durable and studio-focused alternative.

The final direction explored industrial materials, knurled grip detailing and a monochrome finish with a signature red accent to balance practicality, precision and brand recognition.

Work Experience

12-month placement undertaken at Dura Composites, where I contributed to live industrial projects across technical drawing, 2D and 3D CAD, and design coordination.
