NATURAL ORGANIC RENEWALL APPLIANCE
This project explores the development of a design-led hospitality appliance that
transforms organic food waste into reusable cleaning and cosmetic products through
a circular processing system.

Food waste is a major global issue, with around 2.5 billion tonnes wasted each year, contributing to greenhouse gas emissions, resource loss, and environmental damage. The hospitality sector is a significant contributor, accounting for around 12% of the UK’s total food waste. NORA is designed for small businesses such as cafés, coffee shops, and farm shops, helping reduce food waste by up to 70% by transforming organic waste into reusable cleaning products and hand soaps through an in-house circular system.

So the system generally uses: 1 kg of organic material ~ 2–3 L of water. This ratio helps create enough steam for the distillation process while preventing the chamber from drying out or overheating.

The DFM development uses a modular layout with integrated cooling, distillation, and dispense systems to improve assembly, servicing, and thermal efficiency. This enables faster and more precise separation of hydrosols and essential oils while improving consistency, hygiene, and overall system performance.

Branding is a key part of Nora, centred around transforming waste into something valuable through thoughtful, sustainable design. The brand reflects cleanliness, simplicity, and circular living, helping businesses engage more consciously with their waste while promoting sustainable daily practices. This principle influences the product’s form, materials, interface, and visual identity, creating a calm and approachable system that encourages responsibility, innovation, and environmental awareness.
