My project is based on the suffragettes- investigating pockets as a space that holds hidden meaning, standing for what we carry both physically and emotionally. Each page of the look book represents a different pocket, each with a different message that reflects an identity, voice, or personal experience. My message is that we carry voices that are often overlooked and unheard, something as simple as a pocket holds deeper meaning than we expect.
Many respondents said their pockets reflected comfort and identity.
We wear our pockets proudly on our hearts as we remember the women who fought and are fighting for an equal and fair world
BUT
Women’s rights for a voice and equality is still a fight.
While pockets may seem like a trivial matter, they are an object that embody our patriarchal systems.
On average, the pockets in women’s jeans are 48% shorter and 6.5% narrower than men’s pockets.
By restricting the space in which women can keep things safe it reflects wider social inequality
