Hi, I’m Fia! My large-scale oil paintings examine the tension between belonging, otherness and feelings of social alienation, achieved through a recurring humanoid figure, and the subsequent process of ‘world-building’.

The character within my work appears throughout as a kind of extension of myself- familiar but not entirely human. The form is intentionally ambiguous, existing somewhere between the physical and the ethereal, the real and the imagined. Moulded by the lived experiences of often feeling alienated and unable to connect with my peers, my work represents my desire to dissolve boundaries- between body and space, emotion and form, self and other. Through this visual language I try to build a world that feels suspended, where identity is fluid and the edges of reality blur into something more comforting and infinite.
I hope that my degree show can feel fully immersive for you as a viewer, transforming my space into the very same realm seen within my paintings. Each painting tells its own unique story, but together they each connect to create their own space away from reality, both fantastical and surreal. I hope that you can find comfort in my paintings but take with you the unsettling edge I hope to evoke- pushed by the same feelings of alienation that prevalently drive the force behind my work.
